Tears of the Phoenix: Total Solar Eclipse 12/4/2002

by Ken Kalb

At this moment in Earth history, humankind is poised at a critical evolutionary crossroads. As the next New Moon orbits precisely between the Sun and the Earth on the 4th of December, its shadow will create a Total Solar Eclipse for Earth dwellers. The golden rays of the Sagittarius Sun will dim as the interplay of eclipsing planetary dynamics presents a plethora of possibilities which I hope to illuminate here for you. The matrix of eclipse connections is truly mind-boggling!

The Path

The eclipse begins in the Pacific Ocean, crossing Africa over Angola, Zimbabwe and the Transvaal heading across the Indian Ocean, where it reaches its peak in the Indian Ocean, before it crosses the Australian coast at Ceduna and heads over the Queensland border. It peaks at 7:34 am GMT on December 4 (11:34 pm on 12/3 PST, 2:34 am EST on 12/4). In the “Heart of the Matter” section I will interpret the path.

Wrinkle in Time

Eclipses seem to freeze or stretch time, shifting and altering events in the cycle ahead with a sometimes ominous, even perilous flavor. From a week to six months after a total eclipse, significant manifestations begin to unfold, which can be gleaned by examining its chart. Nature reflects this stillpoint, as astrologer R. C Jansky asserts, "during the period of totality, darkness falls and the electrical character of the Earth's near cosmic field is drastically altered. Birds fly about excitedly, night creatures come out of their dens, predators howl, roosters crow, diurnal animals go to sleep and flowers close their blossoms." The entire biomechanical matrix and geocosmic landscape wrinkles.

Flashpoint of the Eclipse

Let’s look at this chart from a variety of perspectives. The flashpoint of this Total Solar Eclipse is 12 degrees of Sagittarius, the point where the New Moon and Sun conjoin near Pluto and Mercury -- forming a stellium. Sagittarius is the sign of truth, humor, vision and higher consciousness, offering the opportunity to take the high road. With Sag’s ruler Jupiter, planet of blessings trining the entire Sagitarrian stellium, there should be ample opportunity. These qualities may, however, be darkened or “eclipsed,” and instead, we find ourselves on Mr. Toad’s wild ride down the low road crashing through the hall of mirrors. We are thus at a critical crossroads. For this point connects both our conscious and subconscious mind to the events and emotions of all the tumultuous changes and challenges of the last two years -- as the eclipse flashpoint is on the very same vector where Pluto and Saturn were in opposition! Oppositions are crossroads events. This could easily trip the trigger of fear generated by the US government and media, and foreshadow another round of the consciousness of panic. This will also empower a potent anti-war movement. To review, Pluto and Saturn faced off peaking in August and November of 2001, then again in May of 2002 -- as a geocosmic hurricane swept the Earth turning the structure of our world and our lives upside down and inside out.

Jupiter, the benevolent ruler of Sagittarius turns retrograde on the very day of the eclipse. The good news is that the Jupiterian impulse actually increases in power during this eclipse station. Furthermore, Jupiter trines the entire Sagittarian stellium. However, the Jovian rays tend to diminish as the jolly giant picks up retrograding speed about a week later. On December 2, God of war Mars moves into powerful Scorpio where it conjuncts Venus and asteroid Juno, a sign where it can be too powerful, sneaky, controlling, and even deadly. This intense conjunction during a New Moon, near powerful Pluto during a Jupiter station creates quite the passionate mix. On the personal level, this may be a very juicy, creative, and tantric time, though on the collective, a rather combustible one. Overlighting 12 degrees Sagittarius is the potent fixed yellow star of wisdom Rastaban, head of constellation Draco the Dragon, beckoning illumination through kundalini serprent power. Will our leaders drink from the fountain of wisdom or succumb to designs of manipulation, control, greed and power? As Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “peace cannot be achieved through violence, it can only be attained through understanding”

The UN, US, and Saddam

Three significant charts to consider are those of the United Nations
, the US, and Saddam Hussein. When the UN was born on October 2, 1945, the success point of the Part of Fortune was at 12 degrees of Sagittarius -- the eclipse focal point. The very effectiveness of the authority of the UN as an arbiter of global peace and resolution will be on trial during this period, whether it be through diplomacy or military action. In the popular Sagittarius rising birthchart of the United States, the Sagittarian stellium sits right directly on the Ascendant, the most powerful cardinal astrological position. The US will want to take action. In Saddam’s chart, deathstar Pluto precisely conjuncts his South Node, while he plays his final round of truth or consequences with the world. This can signal the death of old patterns, a political death, or some other form of transformation.

Astrologer Mark Lerner has found the chart for the first nuclear reaction of December 2, 1942 in Chicago to mark a “nuclear axis”
– with Sun, Venus, and Mercury between 10 and 14 degrees of Sagittarius being a prime zone for anything nuclear.  With the eclipse triggering the middle of this axis, and Pluto ruler of nuclear power in the neighborhood – the issues of the removal, use, and misuse of nuclear weapons will precipitate during the next six months. Will Earthlings ever learn to put the proverbial genie back in the bottle?

The Heart of the Matter

The path of totality of the eclipse leads right through Africa, theoretical seat of hominid evolution. This puts the very existence and survival of the human species right in the crosshairs of our world leader’s nuclear trigger fingers.

During last Summer’s Earth Summit in South Africa, the United States was singled out as the planet’s primary environmental violator. Is the money from oil worth the cost of human blood? The United States and Western friends, so thoroughly addicted to this Earthblood which gives life to machines and makes men rich, greedy, and powerful has a deep and dark history of responding with massive military firepower. So while I hold the torch of peace high, I am not naïve to the current modus operandi.

Energy flows to this Earth from the Sun at a constant rate of 170 billion megawatts a day, or about 25,000 times global energy demand. We have all the resources and know-how to be free from the politics and perils of oil, all we need is the inspiration, leadership and initative . It appears that it is humanity’s destiny to do this out of emergency, rather than awareness. Will we have to await the healing tears of the mythological Phoenix to move collectively in this renewable and sustainable direction?

Ignition

Fiery Mars crosses the eclipse flashpoint on February 4, 2003. If the Iraqi issue is not peacefully resolved by then, I would choose this as the prime time for the next episode of Desert Eviceration.

Infinite Twilight

During the infinite twilight of this eclipse, we stand at the epicenter of the deepest issues facing humankind. It is essential to live in remembrance of our holy birthright. We are alive during the evolutionary implosion of a civilization: a testing time when massive karmic cycles are working out.  We find ourselves living the brilliance and magnificence of creation from within, while at the same time, it is being severely threatened from without. We must dig deeper and shine brighter than ever and create and live our sacred peace from within. On our pathless path to universal truth and divine love, may we shine the special light of our mastery.
